Of the aforementioned skills, you have a finite amount of points to pour into things like survival and efficiency with rifles et al, though you can always farm experience in-game to eventually improve yourself. I opted for one in the middle, though I’ve encountered plenty of heavier players who have admitted that they are basically handicapping themselves for the memes. Lithe characters can run quicker and for longer without needing to pause, while chunkier characters can jiggle their way across the map in their own sweet time and pant and huff the whole way. Players can select from things as menial as tattoos down to body shape, which will then affect your skills. This is immediately obvious when you go to join a game and are greeted with a character customisation screen that’s beyond complex, and it’s not even finished yet. That’s really where comparisons begin and end, however: SCUM is an altogether more innovative and deeper beast. There are zombies (technically referred to as “puppets” as they aren’t undead), a fair amount of running through fields, and survival needs to be maintained. Recently released into Early Access, DayZ fans may find some things immediately familiar in SCUM. It’s also a beautiful game in amongst all the ugliness. I had spent hours upon hours securing my corner of a seaside town that takes up but a small section of SCUM’s 12x12km map, and I wasn’t going to jeopardise it for a fat man in a raincoat who may or may not have also been wearing crocs. I may finally have found the game to wean me off of Fortnite, because Fortnite certainly doesn’t allow you to urinate on zombies. It took SCUM, the punishing survival game from Croteam and Gamepires, just two hours to make me break both those promises, as well as to completely draw me in and refuse to let me go. Therefore, our research group strives to provide timely information and practices for these new progressive crops.I promised I wouldn’t eat people, neither would I take a dump on the remains. As such, the algal crops will need to be rotated, from biodiesel production to a higher-value crop, every so often to offset the costs of biodiesel production. Sometimes crops must be rotated for sustainable production. We think of algae as a future agricultural crop, a way to produce biodiesel for a farm tractor. One of our primary goals is to enhance biofuel and biodiesel production, using algae as a feedstock, but we also look into high-value specialty chemical production. Here in the Gardner Research Group at West Central Research and Outreach Center and housed at the USDA North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory, we isolate and investigate algae that has naturally adapted to produce unique metabolites in an effort to renewably and sustainably offset fossil fuel based production of these chemicals. ![]() What we are just now figuring out, is that we can use algae that have these unique capabilities to produce specialty chemicals, biofuels, and feed, so that we don’t have to use fossil fuel resources to produce them. Those growing in lower temperature adapt shorter or less saturated fatty acids so their membranes are more fluid (flexible) in colder conditions. The ones growing in sunnier conditions figure out how to produce antioxidant pigments to protect themselves from heavy loads of ultraviolet light. So as the algae grows over time, hundreds or thousands of years, they start to adapt their metabolism to better survive in those unique environments. These environmental differences influence where and how the algae grows. Some sunny wet conditions are sunnier than others, or have a higher temperature, or have other chemical present due to human impacts or natural conditions. It all depends on what the environmental conditions are where the algae grows.Īlgae are often thought of as little tiny microscopic plants that thrive in sunny wet conditions. However, unlike crop plants, each individual cell is its own “plant” and they are capable of producing a wide variety of chemical compounds. Just like crop plants, it uses sunlight as an energy source and fixes atmospheric carbon dioxide to make more biomass. It smells, it grows when unwanted, and it can be a pain to clean up but we overlook a very important property of the “green slime”. Kids like to dip a stick into it, swirl it around, and pull tendrils out of the water while scrunching their noses and saying “yuck”. We’ve all felt it and seen it, the slimy green film on the edge of the lake or in the swimming pool that hasn’t been cleaned recently.
